Olde English Bulldog Breed Info:
Olde English bulldogs (Also refered to as, Olde Bulldogs & Olde English Bulldogge) are a fairly recent bulldog breed. Mr. David Leavitt invented the breed after discovering the health problems that are associated with the standard AKC English Bulldog. He sought to develop a new healthier bulldog breed while maintaining many of the English Bulldog’s memorable features.
Typically, the Olde English Bulldog is thought of as a cross breed of the standard AKC English bulldog and its healthier relative the American bulldog. The product of this cross breeding, is generally a more athletic bulldog, less prone to ailments such as joint and respiratory problems.
Most times the Olde English Bulldog stands taller than the traditional AKC English Bulldog. They offten have larger heads and bodys than the standard English Bulldog. The Olde English bulldog can weigh from 50 to over 100 lbs.
After the success that the Olde English Bulldog breed has seen in the past few years, many new breeders are now looking to experiment with bulldog cross breeding. This is resulting in breeding between the AKC English bulldog and other dog breeds out of the bulldog family such as Boxers, Mastiffs, and Pit Bulls. These animals can make great pets. However, be mindful of breeders selling these dogs labeled registered “Bulldogs”.
If you are looking to purchase a true AKC English bulldog, be sure to look for registration of the American Kennel Club (AKC). If you are looking for a newer bulldog, such as the Olde English bulldog, be sure that they are registered by the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) and / or registered by the International Olde English Bulldogge Association (IOEBA). The IOEBA recognizes a few of the newer bulldog breeds, such as the Olde English bulldog, and has set standards for each breed.
Other recognized IOEBA bulldog breeds not mentioned above include: French bulldog, American bulldog, Valley bulldogge, Victorian bulldogge, and Old Tyme Bulldogge.
