Common Bulldog Health Problems
Bulldogs and poor health are almost synonymous. When getting a bulldog you need to be aware of many common problems. A good breeder should be hesitant to sell a puppy they are suspecting has a genetic physical problem. There are laws in place to try and protect consumers from breeders selling and breeding dogs with genetic problems.
For individuals looking to purchase a bulldog puppy there are a list of problems you should be aware of. Common problems found in bulldog breads include but are not limited to:
- Hip and Joint Problems - Such as Hip Dysplasia & Arthritis
- Hip Dysplasia is when the ball joint of the femur does not naturally fall into the ball socket in the hip. Common treatments for Hip Dysplasia are surgery for the most severe cases. More minor cases call for precautionary diet, supplementation, and adjusting with lifestyle changes.
- Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints. Characteristics include pain, heat, reddness, swelling, and limitation of movement.
- Eye and Vision Problems - Such as Cherry Eye
- Cherry Eye is the development of a third eye lid.
- Various Skin Problems - Such as Allergies, Mange or chronic Yeast Infections
- Heart Disease - With their large bodies and short noses making for difficult breathing, bulldogs often over heat and can suffer from heart failure.
- Ingrown Tail - Occasionally, with a English & French Bulldogs the desired corkscrew tail is wrapped too tight and without proper maintenance.
Other common bulldogs traits:
